The 2016 NBA Finals was the championship series of the National Basketball Associations NBA 201516 season and conclusion of the 2016 playoffs. The Eastern Conference champion Cleveland Cavaliers defeated the Western Conference champion Golden State Warriors 4-3 to win their first NBA championship in franchise history. It was the Cavaliers first NBA Finals appearance since 2007 and their first NBA championship since the franchise was founded in 1970.

The series was a rematch of the 2015 NBA Finals which the Warriors won in six games. The Cavaliers won the first two games of the series at home before the Warriors won the next three games in Oakland. The Cavaliers then won Game 6 at home to force a Game 7 in Oakland. In Game 7, the Cavaliers defeated the Warriors 93-89 to win the championship. LeBron James was named the NBA Finals MVP after averaging 29.7 points 11.3 rebounds and 8.9 assists per game.

The Cavaliers victory was a major upset as the Warriors were heavily favored to win the series. The Warriors had the best record in the NBA during the regular season and were led by two-time NBA MVP Stephen Curry. However, the Cavaliers were able to overcome the Warriors thanks to the play of James Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love. James was particularly impressive in Game 7 as he scored 27 points grabbed 11 rebounds and dished out 11 assists.

The Cavaliers victory was a major moment in Cleveland sports history. It was the city's first major professional sports championship since the Browns won the NFL Championship in 1964. The victory was also a major boost for the city of Cleveland which has been struggling economically in recent years.
